Spring is here and the grass on golf course fairways and sports fields is slowly being mown and brought back out of the winter doldrums.
The act of mowing a grass area will stimulate a little natural growth and green up as will aeration. So when is the best time to control weeds in turf?
It is a little early as there are only a few over wintering weeds such as Daisies and Plantains and other broad leaf weeds around. Domestic lawn owners will always apply a three in one lawn care product that contains sulphate of iron, fertiliser and weed killer early in the spring. Turf managers will always maybe spray some soluble iron on their fairways or sports fields to give a bit of colour without the vegetative growth but not apply a weed killer until the weather warms up a bit and you see the Daisies and Dandelions flowering.
The Team at Weed Free possess three fully shrouded self propelled sprayers t hat are capable of weed spraying up to 30 hectares per each day, that’s almost 100 hectares per day. The shrouded sprayers permit economies of scale over the windy weather when conventional boom spraying would be limited.
The weeds know when it is spring and you will know the best time to control them. Last year was very wet and selective weed control of fairways and sports fields did not really happen. There were hose pipe bans, droughts and brown grass then it started raining and it has not stopped yet. This year, you will need to get control of the weeds that grew, seeded and spread. One year of weeds, seven years of seeds.
There is still a requirement for worm cast control using Carbendazim on fairways. It has been just so wet. As soon as regular mowing occurs, the worm casts will be clearly visible. It’s a hard job retaining grass on playing surfaces without worm casts smearing the success of any grasses.
