The killing or controlling of worms is a very emotive subject. All turf care professionals are more than aware that worms are an essential part of the intricate ecosystem that is at work below the turf surface.
Worms will burrow through and aerate the hardest of compacted soils and by increasing organic matter, de-compaction and successful aeration can ensue.
Here however lies the problem; Worms love organic matter and to them, a rotting leaf is roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. The more organic matter they have available, the more activity and for the unfortunate groundsman, the more worm casts.
Out of the twenty five species that are present in the United Kingdom, only three will leave soil deposits on the grass surface.
